Today I received a letter from the editor of the Big Muddy: A Journal of the Mississippi River Valley. Big Muddy, put out by Southeast Missouri State University Press, asked for permission to publish my short story, “The Girl Who Carved Wood.”
I wrote that tale last year and have honed and reworked it many times. It’s been critiqued by two different writing groups and one professional editor. I’ve submitted it to several different literary journals and, up until yesterday, received rejections.
Now, I remind myself to keep submitting material even in the face of rejection. Reminder number two: hone and polish work multiple times, alone and with others. When looking for publication, consider magazines as well as literary journals. Most important, keep writing.
